In 2018, the husband and I traveled to Miami, rented a car, drove the Overseas Highway all the way to Key West, turned back to the mainland again, and then spent a few days hanging around the Everglades. We took in a lot, even though there was a stalled-out tropical depression stuck beside us in the Gulf of Mexico the entire time we were there. A week in Florida, almost no sun.

Since this series is about coastal(ish) areas, I'm drawing images from our stopovers in Key West and Biscayne National Park, with the briefest aside to the Everglades. Enjoy!

Biscayne National Park:

The very tiny skyline of Miami across Biscayne Bay

Our skies in-between the rains

So much fossilized sea life!

Key West:

Cuba is somewhere out there

The Key West squirrel

We did the touristy thing

When you don't go to the sea, Key West brings the sea to you

The Everglades:

I'm going to save my pictures of the swamps and gators and such for a different post. Instead I'm going to show you the coolest animal in the world, as seen from a respectful distance (and zoom lens) along the coastal areas of the Everglades.

Manatees! Manatees are the coolest animal in the world!
